Program Description
Inspired by autumnal themes, “Seasons of the Witch: Honoring Women & The Stories They Inspire” takes a feminist viewpoint of the persecution of women labeled as witches. The program is split into three sections: the first portion explores the witch stereotypes, while the middle reconciles these stories with who these women truly were: unique individuals, healers, and wise women. The final segment encourages living harmoniously with those different from ourselves. The recital includes selections in a variety of languages and musical styles, slides of quotes and translations, along with some poetry excerpts.
As the witch hunts were a global phenomenon, a trio of witchy songs by Fiona Linnane, an award-winning composer in Ireland, has been commissioned especially for this program. The message of the recital, while enjoying the stories history has fabricated of witches, is that being different isn’t wrong, it’s just different.
Additionally, there is an audience engagement available to accompany this program. Since many women accused of witchcraft were often herbalists and healers, Mandy has assembled an information booth with the Smile Herb Shop which showcases samples of herbs and their medicinal properties.
This program is for voice and piano with audio recordings and slides.
