Program Description
William Shakespeare was undoubtedly one of the most celebrated playwrights in history. His theatrical works not only inspired operatic settings of his plays, but also a multitude of art song settings of his lyrical lines, sonnets, and soliloquies. The Shakespearience: Lyrical Lines & Leading Ladies features settings of Shakespeare's texts in art song over a spectrum of musical styles and languages, showcasing some of his most beloved female characters, famous song lyrics from his plays, and sonnets.
Celebrated works on the recital include Finzi's "It Was a Lover and His Lass", rare selections by Korngold, and the charming "Fairly Lullaby" by American composer, Amy Beach.
