Dances, Ditties, Ballads & Rags

Green Leaves

Program Description

Folk songs are melodies and memories of generations past that have stood the test of time. Mostly passed down by oral tradition, even with variations, they are a common shared experience. They touch on themes of love, loss, days gone by, lullabies, wit, and the joys of living. The art song recital, Dances, Ditties, Ballads & Rags, is a celebration of folk songs and melodies showcasing some well-known tunes such as Copland's arrangement of "The Little Horses", Finzi's "It Was A Lover & His Lass", Britten's arrangement of "At The Mid Hour of Night", and Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost Rag", along with works of Vaughan Williams, Bowles, Heggie and their contemporaries.

Dances, Ditties, Ballads, & Rags is the perfect way to introduce classical music to those new to the genre. Classical music lovers will also enjoy some 21st century interpretations of familiar texts in addition to lesser known hidden gems. This recital is sure to touch your heart and set your toes tapping!

Originally this performance was created for voice, piano, harp, and violin for Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center. There are also versions availailable for voice, piano, and violin or for just voice and piano.
